What the score is

Every practice in this directory is scored the same way, from one source: what the practice publishes on its own website, last checked 4 October 2026. We count facts. We do not rate clinical quality, friendliness or outcomes, and a practice may offer a service it does not mention online.

The five measures

Services listed — how many of twelve services the practice's website says it offers (list below). Practices are shown in this order within each town and region page, then alphabetically.
Optometrists named — whether the website names the optometrists you would see, in full.
Published examination fee — whether the standard adult eye examination fee is on the website, and what it is.
Days open — days per week with regular published opening hours ("by appointment" or "alternate Saturdays" does not count as a regular day).
Online booking — whether you can book on the web.

What the badges mean

Widest range of services — any practice listing at least nine of the twelve services, plus the practice (or practices, if tied) listing the most in its town, provided it lists at least six.
Lowest published exam fee — the lowest standard adult examination fee among practices in the same region that publish one (ties share the badge).
Publishes its fees — the adult examination fee is on the practice's website.
Names its optometrists — at least one optometrist is named in full on the website.
Open 7 days — regular published hours on every day of the week.

Who does the scoring

This directory is published by Backroom Ops. The director of Backroom Ops is also a co-owner of Rose Optometry, one of the practices listed, and Rototuna Optometrists is affiliated with Rose. The criteria above are applied identically to every practice, the source page for each listing is linked on its page, and any practice can ask for a correction by emailing hello@backroomops.co.nz with a link to the page on its website that shows the change.
